View of Castel Sant'Angelo from North by G.B. Piranesi, 1748 ca

Piranesi renders the area surrounding Castel Sant'Angelo before the big restructuring which took place in 1936 (when Spina di Borgo was demolished to make space to Viale della Conciliazione) and during the last period of the structure being used as a military compound (it was repurposed as a prison, mainly for political enemies of the Papal government, starting from the XIX century).

The view is also a genuine snapshot of how the northern coast of the Tiber river looked like before the construction of the Muraglioni, which took place after Rome was conquered and included in the Kingdom of Italy.
