At the beginning of the XVIII century Piazza del Popolo was one of the main point of entrance to the city, a lively spot where the flow of travelers and merchants was continous.

The area went through a series of deep renovations ordered by Pope Alexander VII Chigi which started in the second half of the XVII century and included:

Van Wittel captured the scene with his innovative sun-drenched style in light tonalities which despite having little influence in his native land had an enduring effect in Italy where they set examples for leading eighteenth-century vedutisti.
